January 2001 Sound
clip: This clip is an excerpt from Kwame Nkrumah's charge to the
Heads of States at the founding meeting of the Organization of African
Unity in Ethiopia, 25 May 1963. The text of this speech can be found
in Nkrumah's text, Revolutionary Path. The spoken versions of Nkrumah's
speeches were not grammatically exact as the written versions and, as
you will be able to tell, are impacted by his proximity to the audience.
Nkrumah was a speaker that became one with his audience and therefore
he would not mechanically stick to each word and punctuation of his prepared
presentation. He didn't, however, veer from his intended message.
A note about this
particular clip: this excerpt was produced by Johnny Botchway in 1976
and has a slight organ accompaniment in the background. To get a copy
of the tape, which includes other excerpted speeches, you can write to
Mr. Botchway at: P.O. Box 10677, Accra-North, Ghana, West Africa (this
is the address posted on the tape).
